BREATHE FREE ME -
​A LUNG CANCER PREVENTION PROGRAM

Lung cancer is PREVENTABLE! Breathe Free ME is a lung cancer prevention program designed to increase awareness of lung cancer and improve the health of teens and young adults living in the Sagadahoc County region of Mid Coast Maine.

​Maine has some of the highest rates of lung cancer in the nation!
The incidence rate for lung cancer in Maine is 74.8 per 100,000 population, the national incidence rate is 60.3
​Only 4 other states had incidence rates higher than Maine!
​Lung cancer is the 2nd most common from of cancer in America!

​Smoking and tobacco use is still a problem among youth and young adults in Maine.
​In Mid Coast Maine, 24% of high school students and 22% of adults reported smoking or using tobacco.
​The rates of tobacco use among teens in Mid Coast Maine is HIGHER than the national average!
​Smoking and tobacco use is the BIGGEST risk for developing lung cancer!

​Use of e-cigarettes and vaping is replacing smoking among youth; nationally e-cigarette use has risen 900% from 2011-2015.
Youth in Maine are more likely to smoke e-cigarettes than conventional cigarettes.
​In Mid Coast Maine, 31.7% of high school students used e-cigarettes in the last 30 days.
​E-cigarettes are not harmless!

​Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and smokers alike.
In Maine, 12 of 16 counties are in the highest zone for RADON, and the other four counties are in the second highest zone.
An estimated 1 in 3 homes have radon levels that are too high and need to be fixed.
This means that ALL buildings in Maine are at a HIGH RISK of containing TOO much radon gas!
​Every home in Maine should be tested for Radon!

You can choose to breathe free in Maine and lower your risk for developing lung cancer. Avoid preventable risk factors like smoking and vaping. If you use tobacco, get help to stop. Test your home for radon gas levels and have it fixed if levels are too high.
